The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is an ancient Chinese holiday that falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. This traditional festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy across China and in many parts of the world where the Chinese diaspora resides. The origins of the Dragon Boat Festival date back over 2,000 years and are steeped in legend and folklore. One popular legend surrounding the festival is the story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman from the Warring States period. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River as a protest against corruption and injustice, and it is believed that people raced dragon boats and threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. Modern-day celebrations of the Dragon Boat Festival are marked by lively dragon boat races, delicious zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), and vibrant traditional performances. The rhythmic drumming of the boats, the cheers of the spectators, and the aroma of freshly steamed zongzi create an atmosphere of excitement and cultural richness. Beyond the festivities, the Dragon Boat Festival holds deep cultural significance for the Chinese people. It is a time for family gatherings, paying respects to ancestors, and warding off evil spirits. The festival is also associated with promoting health and warding off diseases, as traditions dictate the hanging of aromatic herbs such as moxa and calamus on doors. In essence, the Dragon Boat Festival is a time-honored celebration that embodies the spirit of unity, remembrance, and cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of the values of courage, sacrifice, and righteousness, as exemplified by figures like Qu Yuan. As dragon boats race across the water and zongzi are shared among loved ones, the essence of the festival shines through—a celebration of resilience, tradition, and the enduring power of the human spirit.   The holiday period will run from Friday, June 19, 2026, to Sunday, June 21, 2026, for a total of 3 days.
